State Level Seminar on ‘Medicinal Plants and Herbal Gardens’


Eco Club of DevSamaj College of Education, Sector 36-B, Chandigarh in collaboration with Medicinal Plants Board, UT, Chandigarh, and Yuvsatta (Youth for peace)- NGO organized a one-day State Level Seminar on ‘Medicinal Plants and Herbal Gardens’in the college auditorium. The Principal of the college, Dr. (Mrs.) Agnese Dhillon extended floral samplings to the worthy Chief Guest, Sh. Debendra Dalai, IFS Officer, CEO CREST, UT Chandigarh Administration and Guest of Honor, Dr. Abdul Qayum, IFS Additional CEO, CREST Chandigarh Administration. Dr. Richa Sharma, Associate Professor, DSCE welcomed the keynote speakersand teachers from various schools and colleges.

During Session I of the seminar, presentation on ‘Bringing Health with Herbal’ was given by Dr. Madan Gulati,Directorate of AYUSH, UT Chandigarh. He emphasized on the medicinal properties of the plants and how these can be used in prevention and curing of various diseases. He laid stress on the fact that if these plants are made a part of one’s daily regime, they help in maintaining good health. He gave information about herbal plants like Amla, Aloe Vera, Arjun, Neem, Amaltas, etc. and explained how these are beneficial to health.

It was followed by Session II, during which Dr. Navtej Singh, Extension Specialist (SM), Punjab Agricultural University Ext. Centre, Chandigarh gave presentation on “Scope of Aromatic, Medicinal, and Spice Crops”. He threw light on how human interference and activities has created ecological imbalance. He said that human beings have made the ecosystem fragile and discussed about the steroids that are plant based and animal based. He provided with a list of few spice plants as well as few medicinal plants which we can grow in our kitchen garden. He said that planting these in our kitchen garden is very economical, and safe for environment. He ended his presentation by saying that “Life is All About Balance”.

Further, presentationswere given byEco Club Incharges ofPost Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 42, DevSamaj College of Education, Sector-36B, Government Home Science College, St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School,Sector-44 D, Government Model Sr. Sec. School, Dhanas, St. Stephen’s School, Sector-45, Government Girls Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector-18C, and Carmel Convent School, Sector-9. In their presentations, all the schools and colleges told that they have maintained herbal gardens in their premises through which they inculcate the need and importance of the herbal plants among the students.

The Chief Guest, Sh. Debendra Dalai appreciated the contribution of Mr. Pramod Sharma, Coordinator, Yuvsatta for coordinating between the schools and colleges and bringing them to the same platform.He encouraged Chandigarh to be the torch bearer for the entire country with forty six percent of the green cover and two-hundred-kilometer cycle track with the tallest air purifier soon coming up. The Guest of Honor, Dr. Abdul Qayum told about the various government initiatives taken to introduce to the society about various herbal and medicinal plants. Towards the end of the seminar, trophies were distributed amongst the colleges and schools for maintaining the best herbal gardens, which concluded with a group photograph. By all means, the event was a great success.
