COMMUNITY INITIATIVES
Dev Samaj College of Education has a long tradition of community service and a strong sense of social responsibility. We at DSCE are committed to honoring this heritage and improving the quality of life of the communities we operate in.

We work closely with various organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGO'S) to initiate programmes for development, education and healthcare. We have an active community program for the prospective teachers to spearhead our efforts to integrate concerns, institutional values, culture, and moral decisions, at all levels of the curriculum

To facilitate the implementation of these initiatives, social service clubs have been set up for all the students to participate in. The students and the staff members through these Social Service Clubs render community service throughout the year. The students choose any one of the clubs to work during their course duration.

Social service is a very important aspect of a curriculum and as such feeling for the community is instilled in the prospective teachers by way of active participation in projects involving visiting and rendering social service at the following social service organization.

Community Service at Village Dadu Majra
The village Dadu Majrai has been adopted by the college and is the base camp for all the NSS activities organised in the college. The volunteers aim to make villagers aware of health, hygiene and cleanliness. Save Blood donation drive, Awareness campaigns regarding eye donation, HIV AIDS, environmental issues, first aid etc.

Afternoon school or the children is also organized in order to give tutelage to them in various subjects.

The women folk are also taught stitching, embroidery, applying mehndi, fabric painting, pot-making etc.

Other than this, everyday a community lunch is also organized
The main aim to have this center as a major social service center is to provide the underprivileged with basic amenities and information and initiate the prospective teachers to the harsh conditions in which the rural India lives in.

Institute for the Blind
Every year a team of prospective teachers go to the Institute for the Blind in Sector-26 where they help in the Institute and the blind inmates in recording lessons for the students in Braille stenography apart from helping in the day to day chores such as kitchen, cleaning the provision store.

The camp at the Blind institute is a very overwhelming and an emotional experience for almost all the prospective teachers. The cheerfulness and the self-confidence of the inmates is a lesson by itself, as it reflects the resilience and dignity of the human mind and body.

Blood Bank Society
Blood is one of the things that the medical world has been unable to replicate. It is the very basic component for our existence. Initiating the prospective teachers in the world of voluntary blood donation is our major thrust in the community service projects. The whole idea is to educate the prospective teachers who in turn will motivate youth, the future wherever they go as to have an India where no one dies of lack of blood. That is the mission of this club.

Motivating donors for blood donation and organizing a blood donation camp in the college is the main activity of the club. The major activities carried out by the students at the Blood Bank are sensitizing the youth of safe blood donation. Money is raised for the organisation by putting up stalls for greeting cards at various places like University Campus, Hong Kong Bank, Sukhna Lake, premium market places, educational institutions etc.

Staging a street play to generate awareness regarding safe blood donation at Panjab University and the college campus is also done.

SPCA, The Kindness Club
The love for the animal kingdom is mantra of this club. The prospective teachers very enthusiastically participate in its activities.

Volunteers of this club sensitize the children against cruelty to animals; Vegetarianism and scientific aspect related to the food chain are also discussed. A mass anti rabies vaccination and de-worming camp is held to promote awareness against cruelty to animals at Khajeri village.

Door-to-Door campaign for creating awareness and raising funds for the SPCA aid center is also one of the major activity of the club.

Old People Home and Home for Juvenile Delinquents
Respect and love for elders is an integral part of our culture and heritage. The changing societal needs and way of life has brought in the western attitudes amongst the so-called successful professionals.

The dev Samaj value of promoting relations is the force behind the activities in this club. In this center the students interact with the elderly and do some basic chores for them such as writing letters etc.

Some days they just sit with them and listen to their stories, which really is what the inmates of the home are looking for.

The first floor of the old people home has been converted into the Home Of Juvenile Delinquents, which comprises 14 inmates. The prospective teachers visit the juveniles and teach them to make paper file covers, paper bags, book binding etc., which are then sold at various places. The money earned is then given to the boys.

Sahyog
Environmental friendly is the buzzword in today’s world. We at DSCE have been creating awareness regarding the environment for years where we wholeheartedly work to maintain a city free of plastic and garbage.

Sahyog is a total waste management programme jointly run by Chandigarh Administration, Municipal Corporation YUVSATTA & CAWED to promote the eco-friendly citizens to make city beautiful garbage free. A group of students work for improving environmental awareness under this community service project.

What follows is a training session of the inmates, giving them experience of skills, which can give them handsome livelihood and make them self-dependent. They are trained in stitching, making craft items like- soft toys, photo-frames, fabric painting, pot painting, glass painting, lamp shade making and painting, embroidery, flower making, cooking, murals and envelop making.

The aim is to impart skills that can make then self-dependent so that they can meet and face the challenges of life.

Srijana, a summer camp with a difference
A ten-day workshop is organised annually for the special children belonging to the various social service organizations adopted by the college, this summer camp is indeed with a difference where the prospective teachers conduct activities like book binding, screen-printing, jute curtains, file covers, clay modeling, music training, lecture on Reiki etc with the children belonging to Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, Institute for the Blind, Savera, Bal Niketan, Aasha school, Sadhna Society for mentally retarded etc. A Charkha Club is also integral part of this club so as to inculcate a feeling of value-based culture of our fore fathers and basic education in craft as laid down by Mahatma Gandhi.
